Option A
You are qualified to serve, and can report any day of your standby week:
Step 1: On the Friday before your standby week starts, after 4:30 p.m.; check reporting instructions here , or by calling 415-551-3608.
Step 2: Check reporting instructions after 4:30 p.m. every night of your standby week until you are told to
report or that your service is complete.
California law says you are qualified to be a juror if you:
- Are a U.S. citizen
- Are at least 18 years old
- Can understand English enough to understand and discuss the case
- Are a resident of the county that sent you the jury summons
- Have not served on a jury in the last 12 months
- Are not currently on a grand jury or on another trial jury
- Are not under a conservatorship
- Are not incarcerated in any prison or jail
- Are not on parole, postrelease community supervision, felony probation, or mandated supervision for the conviction of a felony
- Are not required to register as a sex offender
- Were convicted of malfeasance while holding public office and have not had your civil rights restored
Option B
You are qualified to serve, but are NOT available the week you were assigned and need to change your date:
Step 1: BEFORE your standby week starts, login to the juror portal with your badge number that is on your summons.
Step 2: After logging in, click on the tab on the lefthand side that reads: change date of summons and select a Monday date within 6 months of your current assigned week.
Step 3: Look out for a new notice for the week you selected. A new three digit group number will be printed on the notice.
PLEASE NOTE: You are allowed to postpone one time to a new week within 6 months of your original standby week.
Students: select a week during your summer or winter break. If you do not have a traditional break schedule or do not return to San Francisco during your break contact the jury office for instructions.
Nursing Mothers: You may select a new week up to one year from the date on your original summons
Option C
You are NOT qualified to serve and need to inform the Court.
Step 1: BEFORE your standby week starts, login to the juror portal with your badge number that is on your summons.
Step 2: After logging in, click on the tab on the lefthand side of the page that reads " not qualified to serve" and complete the section that applies to why you are not qualified.
Step 3: If you did not opt in for notifications, follow up on your request by checking your juror status in your portal, or by calling the jury office during normal business hours.
Option D
You cannot serve because of extreme personal hardship
Step 1: NO later than THREE business days before your standby week starts, login to the juror portal with your badge number that is on your summons.
Step 2: After logging in, click the tab on the lefthand side of the page that reads "request to be excused" and complete the section that applies.
Step 3: If you did not opt in for notifications follow up on your request by checking your juror status in your portal, or by calling the jury office during normal business hours.
